The brief was to create a light-filled, contemporary extension to the existing brick terrace whilst retaining its heritage charm. As a passionate entertainer, the client wanted a beautiful space for dinner parties which could spill out into the landscape. The kitchen was also a priority, both practically and as an aesthetic feature of the home with a study/library nook for cookbooks. To retain the heritage character, the fireplace (the ‘heart’) was kept and brick party wall revealed to act as a thermal mass feature. The corridor was absorbed by the semi-open plan living and existing archway duplicated to allow light and connection between spaces. Consolidating the extension to the south created two linked northern courtyards. Generous room sizes, layered views and strategic mirrors offers spaciousness that belie the site’s dimensions. What makes this renovation a winner was the clever way in which the designers maximised the relationship of vistas and focal points throughout both the interior and exteriors spaces. The layering of warmth in finishes against the textures of the courtyards. Both function and form are inextricably linked to create crafted spaces, dynamic with the interplay of light, shadow and texture. Minimalist whitewashed veneer joinery is juxtaposed against black porcelain benchtops and mirrored splashback extend the sense of space, reflecting views of landscape and ceiling. Efficient and playful planning provide episodes along your journey: archways revealing a folding timber ceiling, study nook with radiating bookcase that forms the ceiling of a hidden laundry glimpsed through the sculptural staircase balustrade of dark fanning timber. At night the house is transformed, as hidden cove lighting set the mood for entertaining. Description courtesy of BDAV.

The Anderson Residence is awarded the maillot jaune among its competitors in this category. The result of a fully considered masterplan that encapsulates its surroundings, site context and topography, and transforms an exposed, tired old drab beach shack into an amazing re-imagined beautiful modern home, embracing the bush forest ascending to Mount Sabine to the north-east and the rugged ocean foreshore of Bass Strait to the south-east. The design masterfully responds to the brief, offering multifunctional living and entertaining uses for multiple generations, including autonomy and privacy for holiday guests, and reprise from the busy Great Ocean Road traffic. Interior zones are relocated and re-prioritised to capture the ocean views and breezes for through cross-ventilation and climate control combined with solar efficiency. Rainwater is harvested with abundant storage. Bushfire attack has been a major consideration in the design and selection of materials. Night and day the interior ambience offers a warm, snug, wintry retreat, and a cool breezy summer’s delight. Forest-scapes and ocean-scapes are framed by strategically placed and proportionate windows. External intimate elevated decks embrace the sweeping ocean views. Cosy protected courtyards offer alternate retreats. A combination of carefully selected organic tones and colours, materials and textures co-exist with the greys and browns of the forest and volcanic rocky foreshore. These immediately connect the residence with a sense of place and ownership as it rests snuggling into its hillside. The Anderson Residence is now the breakaway among its tight cluster of beachside neighbours and leads by a well-deserved margin as clear winner in this category. Description courtesy of BDAV.
