A stroll through 10 modern Scandinavian homes

If a trip to Scandinavia, including visits to some remarkable contemporary homes is beyond your time or travel budget, this book could be the ideal substitute.

Sumptuously photographed by Per Nagel, supported by floor plans and elevations and concisely explained by the architects themselves, each of the ten chapters takes you on a virtual tour of a private residence, as well as giving you a glimpse of the breathtaking landscapes in which these homes comfortably lie.

While not explicitly focussing on wood, Scandinavian Modern Houses 2 offers both inspiration and proof of the utility that building with wood can provide.

In capitalising on the natural light that’s unique to the region, the houses displayed feature timber as the material of choice to compliment Scandinavia’s ruggedly beautiful countryside. From holiday properties and seaside refuges to an architect’s own design studio, these properties provide a platform upon which wood can showcase its greatest strength; the ability to not just compliment but also add to the landscape in which the structure resides.

The renowned architects featured have used a variety of timber products to achieve this effect: One property utilises laminated pine for exterior walls that will weather in time to a tone matching the surrounding granite boulders, while another family home elected for a forest of wooden columns to provide a warm and welcoming tone complimenting the extensive use of large glass windows.

The architects featured in the book are:

  • Gehrdt Bornebusch
  • Bengt Espen Knutsen
  • Arne Karlsen
  • Yrjö Kukkapuro
  • Bjarne Hammer
  • Wingårdh
  • Jacob Kornum
  • Tormod Olesen
  • Mogens Lassen
  • Lund Hagem
  • Pekka Helin
