Remarkable Sunken Pedestrian Bridge

When confronted with the challenge of building a bridge across a moat to enable pedestrian access to a 17th Century fort, Dutch architects RO&AD opted to go through the water rather than across it.

Their innovative solution not only provides people with the rather unusual experience of being able to walk below and above the water level, but it is a visually unobtrusive way of granting access to the island.

The sides of the bridge are made from Accsys Technologies sustainable Accoya wood, that is both FSC and PEFC certified. A hardwood is used for the bridge decking. The Accoya wood is also treated with a nontoxic coating, protecting it from fungal decay and increasing its durability.
