Structural Solutions for Timber (SA, Adelaide)

Home » Structural Solutions for Timber (SA, Adelaide)

Australia is currently experiencing a resurgence in the use of timber as an engineered product, from residential housing through to midrise construction.  As a result, our understanding of the structural design process is expanding, and our engineers are increasingly interested in the new technologies that exist and are available to the market.  In addition, we are also seeking re-assurance on industry ‘best practice’ for engineered products that we are familiar with.

This WoodSolutions seminar will focus on key design considerations for the structural engineer and builder/building designer, as well as an introduction to the new timber engineering preliminary design software, TimberTech.

We are fortunate to have leading engineers in the field to present on subjects including:

  • The use and application of the new TimberTech software which has the capacity to perform analysis and design of walls, floors and connections – producing calculation reports and bill of materials.  This state of the art software has been developed through a 12 month collaborative R&D project
  • The preliminary and detailed design approaches for various structural systems including CLT shear walls & cores, timber framed shear walls, glulam bracing lightweight and massive timber floors
  • Making the design of engineered timber simpler – including the design of beams and wall bracing.
  • Engineered truss products, including technical guidance and industry best practice

This seminar is a must for all structural engineers and building designers.  It will also interest design managers in project-based roles, and all building professionals including architects, builders, developers and building surveyors/certifiers.

Program and Speakers

09.00am Seminar Registration – Engineers Australia, Adelaide

09:20am Seminar Welcome & Introduction – Barry Brunton, WoodSolutions

09:30am Design of Massive Timber Connections

Presented by Giovanni Scollo – Rothoblaas
Giovanni will discuss the importance of appropriate connection design in ensuring that timber buildings act as they are designed, including major considerations with massive timber buildings in connecting diaphragms, shear walls and transfer structures.

10:00am: Q&A with Giovanni

10:15am Various Engineered Timber Products & Connections

Presented by Afzal Laphir – Meyer Timber
Afzal will discuss a variety of timber products available to the Australian market, and how to make the design of engineered timber simpler including beams and wall bracing.  In addition he will help us to understand what products are available to the industry.

10:45am Q&A with Afzal

11:20am Engineered Truss Products

Presented by Ian Heyward - Pryda
Ian will present on Engineered Timber Products available to the Australian market, and also discuss technical guidance and best practice for the industry – including points to consider from a preliminary design perspective.

11:50pm Q&A with Ian

12:05am Concept Design using TimberTech Software

Presented by Paolo Lavisci & Adam Jones - WoodSolutions
Paolo & Adam will demonstrate the Australian version of the new TimberTech software, which has the capability to perform both analysis and design of lightweight & massive timber systems.  It can quickly define the structure, providing sizing of the walls and floors, design of connections, produce calculation reports and print a preliminary bill of quantities.

12:35pm Q&A with Paolo and Adam

12:50am Mass Engineered Timber - Where have we come from? Where are we now? What is next?

Presented by Stephen Dayus - Wesbeam
Stephen will present a talk on Mass Timber projects both in Australia and internationally. He will examine what has happened, what is happening right now and where we are heading in the use of timber in Midrise construction.

1:20pm Q&A with Stephen

1:35pm Seminar Close

1:45pm Finish
