AFAC23 Theme : Creating a sustainable future: the challenges and opportunities.
AFAC returns to Brisbane for the first time since AFAC16, and we would like to thank our host agencies for this year, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service.
As Australasia’s largest emergency management conference and exhibition, we bring together delegates and visitors from a broad spectrum of organisations, including emergency services, all levels of government, research and academia, and the equipment and service businesses that support our sector.
AFAC23 is pleased to launch Resilience Lane, showcasing not-for-profit and low-income organisations working to build Australia's resilience to disasters.
The AFAC23 program will feature unique content beginning with the AFAC Research and Innovation Day followed by the multi-streamed two-day AFAC23 program. AFAC23 will feature the Australian Disaster Resilience Conference, the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) Australia National Conference, and the Women and Firefighting Australasia (WAFA) Conference running as concurrent streams. Access to these three conferences is included as part of the AFAC23 Conference Pass.
The conference is supported by the INTERSCHUTZ Trade Exhibition. This year’s exhibition will feature hundreds of local and international exhibitors across 15,000 sqm of floorspace and a comprehensive Solutions Theatre program and Demonstration Zone. The sector will come together for the evening social functions, which include the Delegate Welcome Function, sponsored by ISUZU Australia and the popular AFAC Gala Dinner, where delegates can celebrate and reconnect.
The final day of AFAC23 powered by INTERSCHUTZ offers plenty of opportunities for knowledge transfer and
networking through the Professional Development Program.

WoodSolutions is proud to sponsor and present at the Timber Construction Forum alongside hosts IFE.
Timber Construction Forum
Timber Construction Forum will be delivered by key researchers and industry representatives that have been involved in validating the safe design and construction methods for timber buildings.
The forum will provide an update of where the current fire safety knowledge for timber construction has delivered for safe design, and what are the next stages. The fire dynamics of timber compartments are different to our conventional notions of compartmentation and burnout, and this forum is aimed at conveying the latest understanding.

WoodSolutions is excited to present at the AFAC23 Solutions Theatre.
Thursday 24 August 12:25PM
Topic: Resilient Timber Homes
Resilient Timber Homes are an efficient and sustainable solution to the challenges caused by a rapidly changing climate. This presentation shows how they can be designed and built with a resilience-focused “Code+” approach, to provide better safety and wellness their occupants, as well as increased value for the investors and the whole community.
Speaker:
Paolo Lavisci, Program Manager of Resilient Timber Homes at WoodSolutions
Paolo’s experience with Engineered Wood Products covers both hands-on and advisory roles in the design and construction of timber structures, project management, research, product development, teaching, and training.
Projects he has been involved with include the design and specification of multi-storey timber buildings, developing models for prefabricated homes, and the design of CLT manufacturing plants. He also authored a widely used book on the design of timber structures and funded the development of specific structural engineering software.
Paolo has succeeded in changing mindsets in the field and helping those with a pioneering spirit take advantage of the efficiencies provided by timber structures.
