Timber set to rise to 25 metres (8 storeys) effective in May

The new NCC code creates deemed-to-satisfy solutions to build massive timber and timber framed Class 2 (apartments), Class 3 (hotels) and Class 5 (office) buildings up to an effective height of 25m resulting in cost effective and environmentally friendlier mid-rise buildings.

International experience of similar building code changes

Here’s a summary of similar code changes in other countries in recent years to see their level of success in encouraging wood construction. As an example by 2010, two Scandinavian countries had changed their building codes to allow taller residential structures built with wood framing or out of mass timber products such as cross-laminated timber (CLT).
