Overview

The Skellefteå Cultural Centre is a long-term sustainable building that promotes social values and biodiversity. The frame and facades are mainly built in wood which helps to reduce the environmental impact and creates a building that ages beautifully with time.

White Arkitekter won the competition to design Skellefteå’s cultural centre and hotel, which will be completed in 2020.

Structure

The frame and facades are mainly built in wood which helps to reduce the environmental impact and creates a building that ages beautifully with time.

The wooden façade of the 18-story hotel is covered in glass, reflecting the shifts of the sky and giving the impression that the building floats lightly above the cultural centre.

Exterior

The main entry of the cultural centre faces the city, opening up the venue and its ongoing buzz to the people. Rather than creating a closed gallery, the aim is to introduce a new kind of flow in the surrounding streets.

The building will also have a green roof top with soil and meadows to handle day water, contribute to biodiversity and improve the building’s insulation. Parts of the cultural center's roof top landscape is open to visitors so that they can enjoy nature in an urban environment.

Interior

The main entrance of the cultural centre contains a generous stair that connects all activities with the hotel and thus becomes the heart of the building. An open space that invites people to hang out and explore.

The interior is designed with flexibility as a starting point, so that the premises can easily be adapted to future needs without much use of resources.
