Bending members are structural elements subjected to loads that are generally applied perpendicular to their long axis. Bending members are usually horizontal and are often loaded on the narrow face. This produces bending about the major axis of the beam and is generally the most efficient configuration for resisting bending actions. The application of forces to a bending member results in a range of actions, including bending moments (flexure).
