German company, Timber Tower, a collaboration between engineering and hi-tech know how has spent six years developoing a patented system to build very tall wooden towers for wind turbines.
The system comprises solid timber panels assembled onsite to a closed hollow body with a hexagonal, octagonal or dodecagonal cross section. They claim that heigghts of up to 200m are possible using this design.
The advantages of using wood as being lower manufacuring costs than steel, simplified logistics (smaller sections that can be transported in 40ft containers) and improved environmental credentials.
