Meet the WoodSolutions 2011 Seminar Presenters

WoodSolutions 2011 Seminars brought together leading international and Australasian exponents of timber design. The speaker presentations are available for viewing in the Resources section of WoodSolutions.

International Keynote Speaker: Hermann Kaufmann
Architekten Hermann Kaufmann, ZT GmbH, Austria

Topic: Inspiring Sustainable Design

A central theme of Hermann's work is searching for comprehensive answers to the role of modern wood design and construction in sustainable buildings.

Numerous commercial and light industrial buildings demonstrate his application of design concepts to wooden structures suitable for both business and community purposes.

In addition to many single-family houses, Hermann's portfolio also includes sensitive refurbishments of old buildings in significant village contexts that shows his ability to work with existing architectural culture and landscape.

Sustainability and environmental issues are a major consideration in all of Hermann's work.

In 1983 Hermann Kaufmann founded his own architectural office consortium with Christian Lenz and Elmar Gmeiner in Schwarzach.

Since 2002 he has been a professor of architecture, specialising in timber and laminated wood constructions, at the Munich Technical University.

Liam Dewar - Eurban Limited UK

Topic: Innovative Timber Buildings - including Cross Laminated Timber

Liam is a founding director of Eurban Limited, a consultancy and construction company specialising in the design and delivery of cross-laminated timber building structures. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Liam is also a registered Architect having previously worked in the offices of Herzog & De Meuron in Basel, Switzerland and engineers Conzett Bronzini Gartmann in Chur, Switzerland. Eurban is credited with introducing solid timber construction into the UK through collaboration, integrity, and a desire to improve building design and performance. Eurban believes in a holistic and integrated approach to construction, working closely with Architects and manufacturers and employing both timber engineers and carpenters in order to develop optimised solutions and maximise design and build quality.

David Barber, Principal, Australasia Fire Leader, Arup (Melbourne)

Topic: Fire Safety Engineering

David Barber is a principal and leader of Fire Australasia, Arup Fire.  He and his team consult widely on specialist matters of fire management, prevent and protection within the built environment.

Geoff Clark, Troppo Architects

Topic: Maximising Energy Efficiency in Residential Design

Geoff Clark uses a lateral planning and design approach focusing on everything from the macro to the micro.  He has a firm understanding of 'function' in built environments in most places, a knowledge of the vernacular, and a solid appreciation of 'Place'.  Troppo is a practice of regionally based studios aiming to develop regionally responsive architectures. Geoff is currently employed as a Senior Lecturer in the areas of Design and Building Technology at the University of Tasmania.

Assoc. Prof Greg Nolan, University of Tasmania

Topic: Exterior wood finishes and timber durability

Gregory Nolan is a registered architect and lecturer in the School of Architecture & Design.  He is also Director of the School's Centre for Sustainable Architecture with Wood (CSAW), a broad, multidisciplinary research and education group that fosters the use of timber as a building material that is efficient, economic, environmentally sustainable and socially responsible. In addition to work in current and past building design with timber, Greg is also involved in efforts to gain the most from Australia's plantation resources.

Fabiano Ximines, NSW Department of Primary Industry

Topic: Sustainable Design for a Low Carbon Footprint

Fabiano has a Bachelor Degree in Forestry from Brazil (University of Brasília) and obtained his Masters Degree in Wood Science at the Australian National University.

Fabiano is the Program Leader of the "New Forests" Research Group within the NSW Dept. of Primary Industries. He has been involved in a number of projects related to the life cycle of carbon in wood products for the least ten years, including greenhouse life cycle assessments of the use of wood and other materials in houses. In 2010 he attended the IPCC Expert meeting on Harvested Wood Products held in Geneva as an invited expert.
