Overview

The 38 sqm two-storey, self contained structure is accessed via a rear laneway. A CLT structural core is supplemented with a recycled timber circulation space at the laneway facade.

Structure

The project was designed for a prefabricated, rapid, and sustainable building process. CLT provided a solution to all these elements, with increased flexibility in the design phase allowing a quicker and more accurate construction phase. The parts were designed to fit together like a jigsaw, cut perfectly to shape by the XLAM factory in Albury Wodonga before being transported to site ready to erect. A two day construction phase included craning in all CLT elements, which were precision aligned and lag bolted together.

On a minimal footprint of a former garage, the structural core consists of 105mm CLT panels, raised on exposed 500mm concrete walls to provide constructive moisture prevention. The 500mm datum is expressed with a shadow gap internally, providing a strong plinth for the CLT panels to sit on top of.

The remainder of the structural elements come by way of a resource-driven, sustainable approach of material reuse. Recycled timber was salvaged for the circulation space, and brings a contrasting character to the light, sleekness of the CLT. The recycled timber vertical verandah is constructed of a column pair of 140x145mm F27 hardwood timbers, that have been H3 treated. A flitch plate provides a moment connection at the angled joint.

Combined with the utilitarian metal and plastic cladding, the building presents an almost collaged aesthetic to the public. The colorbond corrugated steel and polycarbonate panels protect the CLT, and are perforated on the north facade for light and heat penetration.

Interior

The inner feeling highlights the quality of light that can be achieved with CLT. Given its pale tone, the pine provides a very warm, reflective light that creates a beautiful ambience in the small spaces.

A customised door in the living space fits snugly within the CLT folded wall geometry, creating unique and intriguing views out across the skyline.

The faceted CLT roof has been given a whitewashed finish, further enhancing the reflection of light. This marries well with the white surfaces of customised kitchen elements in 18mm multiplex
