The theme of the conference is ‘Engineering Sustainable Cities’ and will focus on engineers’ and other professionals’ contributions to developing resilience to climate impacts and other environmental challenges in major urban and regional cities. Our capital city suburbs as well as major regional
centres face challenges including population growth, energy reliability and cost, traffic congestion, climate change and other environmental issues. SENG 2017 will provide you with a forum to discuss and debate these challenges and potential solutions for the future.
Themes will include the built environment, transport and congestion, waste management and energy efficiency and security. Keynotes will include a ’state of the climate’ presentation, as a context for identifying and developing risk minimisation strategies and pathways for attaining a net zero carbon emissions economy.

The Paris agreement finally establishes national commitments to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, but are they sufficient to keep global temperatures below the critical 2 degrees C threshold?
The World Climate role-play exercise enables participants to explore the dynamics of the climate and impacts of proposed policies using a model consistent with the best available peer-reviewed science. WORLD CLIMATE, developed by US based advocacy group Climate Interactive, has been used successfully with students, teachers, business executives and political leaders around the world.
The scientific consensus on the reality and risks of anthropogenic climate change has never been stronger, yet public support for action in many nations remains weak. Policymakers, educators, the media, civic and business leaders and citizens need tools to understand the dynamics and geopolitical implications of climate change.
The WORLD CLIMATE simulation provides an interactive role-play experience through which participants explore these issues using a scientifically sound climate policy simulation model. Participants playing the roles of major nations and regions negotiate proposals to reduce GHG emissions. Participants then receive immediate feedback on the implications of their proposals for atmospheric GHG concentrations, global mean surface temperature, sea level rise and other impacts through the C-ROADS policy simulation model used by negotiators and policymakers.
