OVERVIEW
Until now, the choice of construction materials for mid-rise urban developments has been limited to a traditional palette that excluded timber. However changes to the National Construction Code (NCC) from 1 May will enable timber buildings of up to eight storeys without the need for expensive Alternative Solutions to gain approval.
PROPOSED CHANGES
The recent National Construction Code (NCC) changes create deemed-to-satisfy solutions to build massive timber and timber framed Class 2 (apartments), Class 3 (hotels) and Class 5 (office) buildings up to an effective height of 25m resulting in cost effective and environmentally friendlier mid-rise buildings. The changes recognise the advancements in wood products and systems and open up the way to new and innovative ways to take advantage of wood’s environmental and performance properties.
This seminar aims to deliver a hands-on workshop that will work through the WoodSolutions Technical Guide on mid-rise timber buildings and provide attendees with the knowledge to confidently implement the NCC changes.

PRESENTERS
Boris Iskra - National Codes and Standards Manager at FWPA
Boris is responsible for managing FWPA’s activities in building codes and material standards. Boris has had more than 24 years of direct involvement in the Australian forest and wood products sector and holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Structural) degree and a Graduate Diploma in Building Fire Safety and Risk Engineering. He has represented the timber industry on a number of Standards Australia’s Technical Committees including TM-002 Timber Framing and TM-006 Timber Preservation and Durability. He is actively involved in the drafting of technical guides, informing designers, specifiers and regulators in relation to timber engineering and bushfire compliant solutions, and is a member of Standards Australia’s Timber Standards Coordination Group.
Paul England – Director at EFT Consulting
Paul England has been involved in fire research, testing and consultancy for over 30 years. He founded Warrington Fire Research in Australia in 1991 (now known as Exova Warringtonfire) and was responsible for its development as a leading NATA accredited fire test laboratory, research facility and fire safety engineering practice over a period of 20 years. He chairs Standards Australia Committee FP18 which is responsible for developing fire testing and fire safety engineering standards. He is a Fellow of Engineers Australia and is a past president of the Society of Fire safety. He is also a member of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers USA and the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand.
Russell Hall - Architect at Russell Hall Architects
Queensland Architect Russell Hall was the recipient of a Life Fellowship on 10 March 2016. He spent his formative years on a dairy farm at Harrisville in the Fassifern Valley and studied architecture at the University of Queensland and the Queensland Institute of Technology from 1965 to 1974 and for much of the early part of his career, worked in the offices of James Birrell in Brisbane and Port Moresby. Russell's experience in tropical design was cemented by a number of years with the Papua New Guinea Housing Commission, during which he conceived and produced designs for pre-fabricated standard houses which could be easily and cheaply erected by landowners.
