Innovation in timber construction, particularly Cross Laminated Timber (CLT), is driving new possibilities in large scale construction. Interest continues to grow rapidly, with companies large and small, stepping-up to design and build with timber on a variety of projects around Australia. There are many upsides with timber structures driving this interest; It is strong – a high strength to weight ratio is recently being utilised with innovative developments; it is safe – being both durable and achieving fire ratings; it is sustainable – the most viable mainstream building material option, storing carbon to reduce the effects of global warming.
At our next Spotlight event we will be joined by Barry Brunton, Technical Representative from Wood Solutions, and Jeremy Mansfield, Sustainability Manager QLD/NT at Lendlease, to dive into key considerations in designing tall timber buildings as well as Australian case studies to inspire uptake in South Australia.
Barry Brunton's presentation will provide an overview of CLT and how it is finding its market in Australia/NZ; general benefits of tall timber buildings and off site manufacturing; technical factors worth considering in design; benefits of timber products for human wellbeing; research into Australian and financial factors for tall timber buildings.
Jeremy Mansfield's presentation will go into Lendlease’s journey on timber construction and insights on their latest project, 25 King in Brisbane. The largest and tallest engineered timber office building in the world.
Following the presentations, the ASBN will hold a Q&A session between presenters and audience.

Barry Brunton - Technical Representative | WoodSolutions
Barry is a Chartered Civil Engineer with the ICE and has a wealth of construction, off site manufacturing and asset management experience across a broad range of Civil Engineering activities including Highways, Earthworks, Drainage, Railway and Reinforced Concrete Bridge Construction. In addition to the Civil Engineering experience, he has extensive experience working with Timber Engineered buildings including domestic housing, hospitals, schools, multi storey apartment blocks, and more recently Modular construction for Housing. Project experience extends across Australia, Ireland, England and Scotland.
More recently Barry has returned to Australia from the UK and Ireland and is a Technical Representative for WoodSolutions, the industry advisory body for the Timber industry.
Jeremy Mansfield - Sustainability Manager QLD/NT | Lendlease
Jeremy Mansfield has over 25 years’ experience in the construction industry and the last 10 years as Sustainability Manager with oversight of all Lendlease Building projects across Queensland and NT. Jeremy is also a member of the Green Building Council of Australia’s Resilience to Climate Change Expert Reference Panel (ERP).
