As exposed mass timber buildings become more extensive and taller, and the fire resistance period becomes longer, the means available to demonstrate fire resistance compliance of joining timber beam to beams or beams and columns together becomes more difficult.

This presentation will discuss current fire test programs that have resulted in several methods to obtain Deemed-to-Satisfy compliance for metal connectors protected by timber. The speakers will present fire resistance solutions available for timber protected metal connectors as well as methods to provide fire resistance to gaps that are often present in this connection type.

Furthermore, a discussion will be had on the variables that affect timber connectors’ performance in fire, such as conditions that change the timber’s char rate, the difference performance between metal connector types, and the effect of exposed metal parts.
