Your Itinerary:
Begin in the vibrant heart of Tokyo, where you'll see modern Japanese timber architecture by world-famous architects, and unique multi-storey steel/timber hybrid buildings and more.

Next, journey step inside revolutionary housing factories that redefine modern construction. Witness the precision and artistry of Japanese wood engineering firsthand.

A highlight awaits at Hōryū-ji, the world's oldest wooden building and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This extraordinary Buddhist temple, known as the "Temple of the Flourishing Dharma," offers an unparalleled glimpse into ancient Japanese architectural techniques that have withstood over a millennium.

Delve into the rich traditions of Minka (Kominka) construction – the vernacular folk houses that embody generations of architectural wisdom. Experience the intricate building methods that have defined Japanese architectural identity for centuries.

Your journey will include immersive visits to forests, mills, and fabrication facilities, providing a comprehensive understanding of Japanese wood construction from root to roof, including carpentry demonstrations guided by experts.

The tour culminates with two extraordinary days at the 2025 Osaka Expo, where you'll explore an awe-inspiring wooden ring building spanning 2 km in circumference, reaching 20 metres in height, with an 8-metre elevated walkway. Marvel at the timber-constructed country pavilions that showcase the future of sustainable architecture.

TOUR COST:
Around AUD$7,500 (to be confirmed) per person on a single-room basis (twin share price on application). Please note that this price is LAND CONTENT ONLY. Flights/travel to and from Japan are at your own expense. Bookings are confirmed only on full payment of tour costs.

PRELIMINARY ITINERARY (SUBJECT TO CHANGE)

  • Sunday 11 May – Arrival
    Arrive and welcome drinks.
    Accommodation: nearby Nariti Airport, Tokyo.
  • Monday, 12 May – Day trip to Tokyo:
    Tour famous architectural design timber projects. 
    Travel to Shizuoka on the Nozomi super bullet train via the scenic route, which includes views of Mt. Fuji. (approx. 1.5 hours)
    Accommodation: Shizuoka
  • Tuesday, 13 May – Housing Factory: 
    Visit a state-of-the-art house production factory
    Explore the Shizuoka high-country green tea and forestry area
    Visit a “Kominka” (renovated traditional Japanese house) owned by an American scientist with a fascinating backstory
    Accommodation: Sumatakyo (alpine village), stay at traditional Ryokan with onsen (optional) and kaiseki ryori dinner (included)
  • Wednesday, 14 May Traditional Japan Timber:
    Travel to Nara Station by bullet train (approx. 3.5 hours)
    Explore traditional Japanese wood processing, forestry methods, and carpentry demonstrations (guided by experts) Accommodation: Nara
  • Thursday 15 May – Osaka Expo:
    Explore the world's oldest wooden building, (Hōryū-ji temple)
    Travel by train to the Expo (approx. 1.0 hours)
    Explore Expo exhibits for most of the day.
    Accommodation: Hotel near the Expo site.
  • Friday 16 May – Osaka Expo Full day at Expo.
    Evening Sayonara Party in Dotonbori, Osaka.
    Accommodation: Hotel near the Expo site.
  • Saturday, 17 May – Tour ends (travel home or explore Japan).

ACCOMMODATION
4-star accommodation in a single-room accommodation basis, including hotel taxes and service charges. Note the traditional
Japanese Ryokan is not 4-star.

EXCLUSIONS
All airfares and associated travel expenses, travel insurance, meals not specified in the itinerary, airport transfers, alcoholic drinks outside the two receptions, personal sightseeing and personal expenses.
