WCTE is the world's premier forum for presenting and discussing the latest technical and architectural developments and innovations in wood or timber construction. WCTE is the most prestigious international event in timber engineering, engineered wood products and design of timber structures, which is held biennially in different parts of the world and attracts researchers, engineers and architects, code consultants and building officials, contractors and project managers, fabricators and suppliers from all continents. During WCTE 2018 the traditional focus on timber engineering and material science will be complemented by architecture related topics such as evaluation methods for green buildings and by an own platform for computer-based methods for modelling, parametric design, production, etc.
WCTE 2018 is organized by National Institute of Forest Science(NIFoS) which was founded in 1922 and is the leading organizational institute and the only governmental research institute in forest sector in Korea. It is mandated to develop forest science and technology for citizens' wellbeing, healthy environment and global forestation. NIFoS aims to be a global institute in forest and wood sector.
Timber Engineering in Korea
Korea, also known as 'the Land of Morning Calm', has enjoyed splendid wooden culture based on rich forest land in its 5,000 year old history. The traditional timber utilization culture and timber structures have been well preserved and practiced until this day. But, the rapid economic growth in Korea brought about the demand in large number of houses and apartments to accommodate concentrated population in a metropolitan city, like Seoul. Therefore, timber construction rarely have been used in Korean cities during the past decades with rapid change. But, recently, the more interest of timber/wood construction has been raised because of eco-friendly living conditions and the advantage of green house gas reduction from wood utilization. In this regard, Korean timber engineering industry needs to focus on sustainable timber utilization as long term use, such as construction for school buildings, public construction, non-residental facilities, and high rise timber construction.
