Overview
This renovation to a double fronted Victorian home in St Kilda seizes the opportunity for natural light and enjoying the immediacy of garden from within. Walking through the home the ceiling plane over shifts to create a heightened volume over new living and kitchen spaces, while creating an alternative wide outlook of sky. The raked ceiling volume reveals a luxurious kitchen, indoor planter and highlight windows over that capture northern light deep into the living and allow ventilation.

Exterior
The two bedroom home is relatively compact in size (120m2). Glazed doors to the back garden were designed to provide maximum outlook and are able to be opened out of sight, retracting fully into a wall thickening. The deck holds the sense of garden close, while still providing a cosy table space surrounded by built-in bench seating.
Interior
An internal curved wall, chevron flooring and shifts in geometry in the deck dissolve the tunnel effect often apparent in linear homes and expand the sense of spaciousness. The sitting area has been designed to allow its easy conversion into a third bedroom with little impact to dining and living areas should a further bedroom be required.
Internally, the renovation accommodates the owners’ personalities and objects they wanted to display, but had never had an appropriate space. Custom powdercoated thin steel shelving adjacent the dining area creates a home for their collections. McManus Lew Architects worked collaboratively with the owners’ and their material preferences to offer them their own unique sense of home.
