Overview

Standard off the shelf material sizing dictated the dimensions of the OCM house. This measure of detailing not only allowed a tight budget for the young clients, but also minimised waste from material off cuts.

Exterior

The exterior of the OCM house features a strikingly unique grid pattern. The main cladding material is black fibre cement sheet. Timber battens were required to protect the joints between the FC sheets. Taking advantage of the aesthetic opportunity, a pattern was devised from the battens that in turn determined the size and locations of the window openings- creating a unique detail and articulating the facade.

A deep covered terrace has been carved from the otherwise perfectly rectangular form, optimising the northern orientation, and opening up the interior to the suns movements through the day. Blackbutt timber was also used for the decking.

The warm timber deck lining contrasts with the dark exterior cladding, to create a peaceful and welcoming exterior environment.

Interior

The interior strategically fits 3 bedrooms into the tight floor plan. The bedrooms are housed along the eastern end of the house, with one of the bedrooms opening up to the terrace.

Ensuring the living areas were open plan, and opening them up to the terrace, meant the compact space feels open and can soak up maximum sun during the day.

The plywood lining is natural and light, providing visual clarity throughout the space, and reflecting the suns rays. The ceilings were reduced to 2400mm to fit a standard FC and plywood sheet.

Battening of the terrace was completed using Australian blackbutt timber, which was also used for much of the joinery throughout the house. The joinery was finished using a natural-finish sealer and oil, while the blackbutt battening was finished using a deep penetrating oil.
